THREAT ASSESSMENT FROM SECURITY BOSS A SCATHING WARNING ABOUT SAFETY, SECURITY UNDER LABOR

Over the next five years, a complex, challenging and changing security environment will become more dynamic, more diverse, and more degraded.”

These were the words of the Director-General of Security, Mike Burgess AM, in his 2025 Annual Threat Assessment address this evening.

He went on to describe the intensifying levels of espionage and foreign interference, including from Russia, and highlighted the role that both social media and the normalisation of violent protest and intimidation have played in the antisemitism we are seeing today – attacks which he claims, “have not yet plateaued".

This is a stark warning for Australia regarding the urgent need for strong leadership in national security, particularly concerning antisemitism, social media, and foreign interference.

The Coalition has consistently worked to collaborate with the Labor Government on defence and national security matters. However, time and again, they have been compelled to lead from opposition due to Labor’s reckless incompetence and disinterest.

The Annual Threat Assessment highlighted what we already know: that Australia is less safe under Anthony Albanese. Antisemitism and hate are tearing apart our communities and putting lives and livelihoods at risk.

Our intelligence, defence, and law enforcement agencies are fiercely protecting Australians against a vast number of threats, both foreign and domestic.

But we must remember that national security and social cohesion aren’t just issues for lawmakers in Canberra. The decisions and indecisions of this Government have had a direct impact on the safety and security of neighbourhoods like ours on the Sunshine Coast.

Violent detainees – including sex offenders and paedophiles – were released into regional Queensland communities without a plan. Antisemitism has infected campuses and communities across the state. I’ve heard from local child safety organisations about the rise in radicalisation and extremism in Sunshine Coast schools and on social media.

Youth crime, knife crime, and online exploitation are out of control. Families on the Sunshine Coast are paying the price for the weak leadership and wrong priorities of Anthony Albanese and his state and territory Labor counterparts.

The decisions you make about who represents you in Canberra have a direct bearing on your safety and our future. We’ve seen the price of a Labor Government in power. We are weaker, less safe, and utterly unprepared to face the challenges ahead of the country with Anthony Albanese at the helm.
