Prepare, Don’t Panic: Tropical Cyclone Alfred Update
Let me start by saying, thank God for our first responders. Grateful for those working hard to prepare for TC Alfred and the storm conditions we're already experiencing.
I've been briefed by the Bureau of Meteorology on the latest developments this morning.
Currently a Category 1 system, Alfred has sustained winds near the centre of 85 km/h, with gusts up to 120 km/h. It is positioned approximately 465 km ENE of Brisbane and 430 km NE of Maroochydore, moving southeast at 20 km/h.
What to Expect:
Alfred is forecast to intensify to Category 2 tonight and maintain that strength as it nears the Southeast QLD coast.
A coastal crossing is expected late Thursday, but the exact location remains uncertain. The zone of possible impact extends from Sandy Cape to Cape Byron, including Greater Brisbane.
Severe coastal hazards—abnormally high tides, hazardous surf, and large swells—will worsen from Tuesday onwards.
Gale-force winds (up to 120 km/h) may impact coastal and island communities between Tewantin and Grafton from Wednesday, extending north to Sandy Cape later that day.
Heavy to intense rainfall could cause dangerous flash flooding, particularly near and south of the system’s centre. Flood Watches are in place from Mary River (QLD) to Camden Haven River (NSW).
